Constipation can be debilitating. It can leave you feeling nauseas, bloated, in pain and anything but well. There are different causes of constipation and may be anything from lack of fibre to poor peristalsis, the snake like movement the bowel uses to move the stools along. A diet full of processed foods, such as breads, cakes, biscuits and pasta and a lack of fruit and vegetables alone is enough to bind up a bowel. Lack of water can also cause dry pellety stools that are difficult to pass and often times will cause a fissure which will sting and burn during the movement of a stool. Before you reach for a laxative think about the food you are consuming. Aim at protein, vegetables (5-7/day) fruit, nuts, seeds and healthy oils, such as coconut, olive, flaxseed (not for cooking) or avocado. Increase your intake of oily fish, like mackerel, sardines and salmon. Use flaxseeds to aid in elimination. Stewed or pureed apple will assist with constipation along with stewed prunes and prune juice. Remember there may be an underlying issue that needs to be addressed. If you need further help please feel free to make an appointment to discuss further options.
